I rarely submit to writing contests, but I had submitted this piece to a local creative nonfiction contest and since I was not amongst the winners, I figure I might as well share it here on my substack—I hesitated to, but if I was willing to have it judged and possibly published by someone else for all to see, I might as well do so myself.
