Neat story, but I’m sitting here still rather confused at the end. Haven’t quite put it all together, though I have the gist.

I’m delighted to see your SM4! I use an SM8 — it’s not as pretty a machine, but a good friend.

Yeah, it's a pretty open-ended sort of ending, I don't think I really intended it to be super clear, but I honestly don't remember what was going through my head 🤣

Olympias are SO nice to type on. I also have a splendid 33 and it's a cute little thing!

Cool! Never heard of a Splendid 33, so I looked it up. Pretty! That sleek design reminds me a bit of an Olivetti Valentine (I had one briefly). Yeah, Olympias are great machines — those Germans knew how to make solid typewriters.

In the forthcoming seventh part of my current essay series, I’m making the case for writers using typewriters. They’ve been good for my writing process. Peak at the essay series in case you want to know about it: https://singulardream.substack.com/p/infinite-lock-in

Thanks!

Yeah the thing was so moldy and gross, gave it a good spit-shine and it's much nicer to look at now!

I learned to type on my mom's electric Brother. And then we had typing classes at school with all those "fun" ms-dos games. They don't even teach typing in school at all anymore. I'll be over here shaking my cane.

I'm a couple years younger but working class kid so my house always felt at least a decade behind. Til 2001 I only had access to computers at school or the library.
